Liberated from Nursing Homes

With the help of DIRECT Action and University Legal Services (ULS), this 39-year-old woman moved out of a nursing home where she had lived for six years following a brain injury and mobility disabilities. She lives in her own apartment subsidized by a Section 8 [housing choice] voucher that was issued by the DC Housing Authority. We helped her transition from the nursing home to ensure that she had the medical equipment she needed through DC Medicaid. She now has regular visits with her three children and is active in her church in the community.

For three years, this 49-year-old man was in a nursing home and faced homelessness when the nursing home announced that it was closing. With the help of DIRECT Action and ULS, he moved into a privately-managed subsidized apartment. DIRECT Action is helping him with his transition to independent living. He has begun to learn to use computers, visits the Center for Independent Living, and with Bobby's assistance, he has registered for services through the Rehabilitation Service Administration.

Bobby Coward of DIRECT Action met this 29-year-old man (at the computer)with spina bifida in the hospital and followed up with him in nursing homes for nearly two years to plan for his transition to the community. DIRECT Action and ULS assisted him in getting a subsidized fully wheelchair accessible, privately-managed apartment. He also receives daily attendant care and nursing services to assist him in his own home.
