Meet the Director

Bobby Coward receiving Spinal Cord Injury Network’s annual Jane Mackintosh Award.Robert (Bobby) Coward is the director of DIRECT Action. He is also the leader and chair of Capital Area ADAPT, the local chapter of a national grassroots organization of disability rights activists. He is a member of the cultural diversity advisory committee of the National Council on Disability. He was awarded the 2000 Paul T. Hearne Award for Young Leaders with Disabilities, the Jane McIntosh Award presented by the Spinal Cord Injury Network of Metropolitan Washington in 2002, the 2006 Alston Bannerman Fellowship, the 2005 Community Foundation Linowes Leadership Award, the NCIL Region III Advocacy Award, and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 2002.

Mr. Coward is also a member of the D.C. Medicaid Olmstead Planning "Real Choice Systems Change" Committee, a former member of the D.C. Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a jet mechanic.
